SINGAPORE — Today, TEG announces that the Republic’s top football club Lion City Sailors will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Tiger Cup on 26 July, stepping up as a representative of Singapore football in the Singapore Festival of Football Driven by CDG Zig. The Singapore Premier League club will replace AS Roma and join Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool FC, Leicester City FC and FC Bayern Munich in what promises to be an exhilarating week of football at the National Stadium.
The change in schedule is because the Korean leg of AS Roma’s tour is not proceeding as planned and the club has therefore had to reschedule its pre-season plan. Ticket holders with seats in the AS Roma section for the match on 26 July will be automatically refunded. Other existing Tiger Cup tickets remain valid, but Tiger Cup ticket holders can request a refund at https://bit.ly/refund-m1 by 12 noon on 21 July. Those who wish to purchase tickets for any of the three matches can do so at https://bit.ly/sfof-23.
Geoff Jones, Group CEO of TEG, said: “We are pleased to confirm that the Lion City Sailors will play in the Tiger Cup on 26 July. The Lion City Sailors are a valuable partner of the Singapore Festival of Football Driven by CDG Zig, and we are grateful for their support in ensuring a successful event. We are thrilled that they will also be part of the action on the pitch.
“With a homegrown team taking on a top English Premier League club, this event is set to be a grand showcase of the sport featuring a unique blend of local and foreign playing styles.”
“We will be playing some of Asia’s best teams in the upcoming AFC Champions League (ACL). Playing against a top team such as Spurs will provide us an opportunity to better prepare for the rigours of the ACL, and also provide a visual treat for our club’s supporters,” said Sailors’ Chairman Forrest Li.
“Spurs are a well-supported club in Singapore and we expect many of their fans to turn up. We hope the match will provide Spurs’ fans an exposure to local football and spark some interest in our local football league.”
Donna-Maria Cullen, Executive Director of Tottenham Hotspur, said: “We are extremely excited to be returning to Singapore during our 2023 Asia-Pacific Tour. We have fond memories of our most recent visit in 2019 and have an extremely passionate fanbase in Singapore, including an Official Supporters’ Club that has been established for more than 20 years. The game against the Lion City Sailors will be a great experience for our fans to see us play against Singapore’s leading club side in the National Stadium.”
The inaugural Singapore Festival of Football Driven by CDG Zig will be held at the National Stadium from 26 July to 2 August with the Tiger Cup: Tottenham Hotspur vs Lion City Sailors kicking off an action-packed week of world-class football. Liverpool FC will defend their Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy against Leicester City FC on 30 July before they take on Bundesliga champions FC Bayern Munich in the Singapore Trophy, presented by Audi and Standard Chartered, on 2 August. Spurs and Liverpool FC will also hold open training sessions at the National Stadium on 25 July and 29 July respectively.
Off the pitch, fans are encouraged to attend the Football Interactive Fanzone, which will be open on match days, Spurs’ and Liverpool FC’s open training days, and 1 Aug prior to the Liverpool FC and FC Bayern Munich game. Fans will get the chance to meet club legends, giving them a once-in-a-lifetime moment with their football heroes. There will be photobooths, giveaways and performances, along with Q&A sessions with club legends. Fans can also meet the team mascots including Tottenham’s Chirpy and Lily, Mighty Red of Liverpool FC and FC Bayern Munich’s Berni.
