LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND — San Juan (PUR) won their first-ever FIBA 3×3 World Tour event since the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Miami Final in 2012 in Lausanne, Switzerland on August 20-21, 2021.
What a difference a day makes. Just one day after losing their opener against Ub (SRB) by nine points and winning their ticket to the knock-out stage in overtime, San Juan planted their flag on the 3×3 court with wins against a Riga (LAT) team that featured three Olympic gold medalists, the number one team in the world (Liman, SRB) and that same Ub team in the final (21-13).
The 29-year old Angel Matias was named MVP of the Lausanne Masters after leading his team in player value and knocking down a total of three Tissot buzzer beaters in five games! However, in the final, it was his teammate Gilberto Clavell who stepped up with 12 points, including the game-winner. It was the first Puerto Rican Masters win since Caguas in 2016.
The 3×3 Olympic bronze medalist Dejan Majstorovic and former Lausanne Masters MVP (in 2017) finished number one in player value and had a team-high 8 points in the losing effort for Ub in the final.
In the individual contests, Piotr “Grabo” Grabowski (POL) won the Dunk Contest, presented by Lausanne, Olympic Capital while Craig Moore (Princeton, USA) dominated the Shoot-out Contest, presented by MTF Quadra.
All the health and safety measures requested by local and national authorities and the Guidelines for the Return to Basketball, developed by the FIBA Medical Advisory Group (MAG), which were successfully introduced last season, were implemented once again.
